It turns out Will Smith wasn’t crying on that Red Table Talk episode.
In a behind-the-scenes shoot of the making of the episode, the Bad Boys actor explained why he looked like he was tearful, saying it had nothing to do with Jada Pinkett Smith‘s “entanglement” with singer August Alsina.
“I’m not sad a lot,” Smith said in the video uploaded on his YouTube channel on Monday. “I think because I drink so much coffee, I get dehydrated and it makes my eyes water. People think I’m crying all the time.”
“He doesn’t cry. He wasn’t crying,” Pinkett Smith said, before Smith added some context.
“We were shooting at midnight because we were trying to rush and go to the airport in the morning,” Smith continued. “I said reshoot it but it played out. Everyone is like ‘Poor Will.’ …They love theyself some Will.”

Smith became a viral meme after the episode, in which Pinkett Smith confirmed she had a relationship with Alsina during a breakup in their marriage.
They agreed that the experience brought them closer together; Pinkett Smith emphasised that she’s grateful for their journey, and that there “are a lot of couples who go through those periods… and have to separate, and think it’s over”.
“Through that particular journey, I learned so much about myself and was able to really confront a lot of emotional immaturities, emotional insecurity, and I was really able to do some really deep healing,” Pinkett Smith said on her Facebook Watch show.
“And as I came through and started to realise certain things about you and I, he decided to break all communication with me, which was totally understandable. And I let that be and hadn’t talked to him since, so it is a little weird that all this stuff is coming out now since this was several [years ago].”
