What was the spark for this exhibit and what was the draw for you two to curate it?

Shawn Martinbrough: The Govt Director on the Society of Illustrators, Anelle Miller, approached me about curating a present that may function Black comedian e book artists. I used to be excited by the concept and requested my pal, author, and journalist Karama Horne if she would have an interest and accessible to curate an exhibit with me. We brainstormed and developed the idea of “The Artist Expertise”, which might not solely function high Black comedian e book artists but additionally present an unique look into their inventive processes.

Karama Horne: When Shawn initially requested me to co-curate, I used to be excited on the prospect of having the ability to showcase sequential artwork in a up to date gallery setting. That’s hardly ever carried out, and comparatively unprecedented for Black artists.

With so many nice Black artists on the market what was the method in selecting artists, what have been the factors for his or her inclusion?

SM: This was probably the most troublesome a part of curating as a result of there are such a lot of gifted Black comedian e book artists to select from and between Karama and I, we all know fairly just a few of them. As a result of restricted area and a particularly quick timeframe to curate, we centered on a small variety of artists with very completely different kinds and distinctive approaches to sequential storytelling. It’s our hope that it will solely be the primary in a collection of “Artist Expertise” exhibitions in order that we are able to function many extra artists sooner or later.

KH: It was very arduous to slender down the listing, however the artists featured have both received awards for his or her illustrations or have created groundbreaking art work which deserves to be acknowledged.
