NYCC ’20: Marvel & Hulu offer a first look at MODOK

The final vestiges of pre-Kevin Feige-led Marvel TV are on full display at this weekend’s NYCC Metaverse event. On the live-action side, there are panels dedicated to ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hulu’s forthcoming Helstrom series. And then there’s MODOK, the Patton Oswalt-starring animated series also coming to Hulu. Ahead of a panel dedicated to the series today, Marvel and Hulu have revealed (via EW) a first look at the stop-motion animated M.O.D.O.K., and it’s everything you could’ve expected from a show centered on a character who is essentially a giant floating head with little arms and legs.

M.O.D.O.K. follows the activities of the Mechanized Organism Designed Only for Killing during his off-hours. What does an evil floating head do when he’s not managing a terrorist organization intent on taking over the world? The first-look images from the series presented by EW answer that question, as they feature M.O.D.O.K. out at a restaurant with his family, including equally-giant-headed daughter, Melissa (voiced by Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Melissa Fumero), son Lou (Parks & Recreation‘s Ben Schwartz), and wife Jodie (Lucifer‘s Aimee Garcia), as well as threatening his professional rival, Austin Van Der Sleet (Beck Bennett of SNL), with buzz-saws, as one does.

Co-created and produced by Oswalt and Jordan Blum and animated by Robot Chicken‘s Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, the M.O.D.O.K. animated series is the sole survivor of an originally-announced slate of four animated Marvel series coming to Hulu. The other shows would have included characters like Howard the Duck, Hit-Monkey, Tigra, and Dazzler, all of whom would have eventually teamed up as a group called The Offenders.

I’m not sure what I expected an animated M.O.D.O.K. to look like, much less a stop-motion animated one, but the finished product is terrifying hilarious, and more than a little unsettling. No release date has yet been announced for the series, but more information may be forthcoming later today during the show’s NYCC Metaverse panel.
