Showrunner Patton Oswalt reveals that he managed to get permission to use a couple of characters from the X-Men universe in Marvel’s MODOK show. Oswalt co-created the show with American Dad’s Jordan Blum and will voice the floating head villain. The Hulu adult animated series uses stop-motion animation and is set to be Marvel’s strangest and funniest show yet. Joining Oswalt in the voice cast are Ben Schwartz (Lou), Melissa Fumero (Melissa), and Aimee Garcia (Jodie), who play the members of the villain’s quirky family.
Set to debut on Hulu in early 2021, MODOK pits the strange villain against two dilemmas. He has to deal with the fact that AIM, his villainous organization, has been taken over due to him running it into the ground after his failed attempts to take over the world. At the same time, he also has to negotiate family life with a pair of hormonal children and a wife who wants him to be more actively involved at home. MODOK will also aim for several of Marvel’s classic characters. Meaning the show is taking an Into The Spider-Verse approach to the material by mocking some of the more established names in the Marvel Cinematic Universe while also forging its own place in the universe.

During today’s virtual MODOK panel at New York Comic-con, Oswalt revealed that some of those Marvel characters would come from the X-Men universe. He hints that they could be major characters from the universe, and even potentially core members of the X-Men, saying that he was worried once Marvel realized what they’d agreed to, they would probably rescind their permission to use them. However, without revealing who will appear, Oswalt says that they made the cut and will be part of MODOK. You can read his full comments below:
We pitched a couple of characters – some even in the X Universe. We were like, “I don’t know if they’re going to say yes to this,” and they were like, “Yeah, go ahead.” Again I don’t want to say, but there were a couple that Jordan and I especially were like, “Oh I don’t think they realized what they just said yes to. Let’s write this but let’s have a backup cause they’ll realize and go ‘oh no actually you can’t have him.’ But no, we got them.
While there’s little given away about who appears, Oswalt is definitely hinting that at least one prominent member of the X-Men will appear in MODOK and that they’re male. This means that any of Wolverine, Beast, Cyclops, Gambit, Professor X, or a host of others could make an appearance. Another choice would be Magneto, who may appear as a more successful example of a Marvel villain to make fun of MODOK. The possibilities are endless, and it will be fascinating to see how the character slots into the show, and just who will voice them.
It would be even better if one of the actors who played the Fox movies’ character voices the same character in MODOK. Fan’s head would likely explode if someone like Patrick Stewart or Hugh Jackman reprised their role for the animated show. The move also technically means that the X-Men will make their debut in the MCU in MODOK, given that the show is supposedly part of the wider universe.
