Kim Zolciak-Biermann opened up about her ongoing estrangement from her parents during an interview this week.
Following the premiere of the eighth season of her family’s reality show, Don’t Be Tardy, the former Real Housewives of Atlanta cast member addressed the series’ first episode, which featured her father’s cancer reveal, before speaking with her daughter, Brielle Biermann, about their friendships with the Kardashians, including Kim Kardashian and Khloe Kardashian, and discussing their “best season yet.”
“If [my parents] didn’t harm my children they’d probably still have a relationship with me,” Kim admitted to Gibson Johns on In the Know.
While Kim suffered a falling out with her mom and dad nearly 10 years ago as they shut down their relationship with Brielle and gave negative statements to tabloids about Kim’s parenting, she was shocked to find out that her family had hidden her dad’s diagnosis from her.
“I just think when there are certain things that are this serious, I should have been told. And it was casually said to me so I was not expecting it at all. It was very hard for me to swallow,” Kim explained. “I will always love my parents and they’re still my parents, at the end of the day. So to find out that this is this serious was like, ‘Oh God.’”
According to Kim, she has considered how she would feel about one of her parents falling ill in the past, but thus far, that hasn’t changed her outlook on their messy feud.
“I’ve thought all these years, ‘What if something happened to my mom or dad today? Would you regret this time not speaking to them?’ And honestly, my kids come before anybody. I made that decision a long time ago,” Kim shared.
As for Brielle, who attempted to spend time with her grandparents on a number of occasions after their falling out with Kim, she isn’t taking the drama personally.
“[We] know that it shows more of them and has nothing to do with us or even my mom. They’re just who they are and you can’t change that,” she shared.
Moving on to their friendships with the Kardashians and their friends, Brielle told Gibson that she first became close with the family after connecting with Malika Haqq.
“I became close with Malika and from that, we’ve become friends with everyone,” she stated.
“I met Kim a long time ago. Khloe and I… It’s been six, seven years that we’ve been friends. I love them,” Kim revealed. “I think they’re really good people. They’re ride or die people, honestly. I adore them. Because of television and this kind of world, it’s awesome to have friends you can bounce things off of that you wouldn’t ask a normal friend. We have a cool, relatable connection.”
While Kim and Brielle have bonded with the Kardashians due to their fame and time on television, Brielle said she’d never want to be as famous as the stars of Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
“I can go to Target and not have security. I’d never want to be in the position I think the Kardashians are in where you’re just bombarded. I don’t ever want that,” Brielle explained, adding that she also doesn’t want to be “a nobody.”
As the eighth season of Don’t Be Tardy continues to air, Kim said fans are in for their “best season yet.”
“[It was] the most dramatic and the hardest but the best,” she teased. “There’s definitely some very unexpected moments, a lot of tears in certain situations, a lot of fun, a lot of laughter, a lot of just really living in the moment. I tend to always be thinking about tomorrow and the next day instead of truly living in the moment, and that was my goal, was to really focus on being in the moment.”
That said, spending 40 days in a camper with her husband, Kroy Biermann, and their six kids wasn’t always free of challenges.
“I definitely was thinking, ‘Get me out of here’ at certain times but we, as a family, are super close,” she added.
